Review: Olaf’s Artisan Bakery Cafe

Olaf’s Artisan Bakery Café proves once and for all that you can’t judge a café by its title.

Probably many of you have already dismissed Olaf’s Artisan Bakery Café outright as being too posh, while others may think, judging purely by the name, that it’s unexciting and a little bit bland.

Well, I’m here to tell you that – clunky name aside – this brilliant café in Mount Eden boasts some of the best cabinet food in Auckland.

Sandwiches are the star of the show, seeing as Olaf bakes its own bread. The man with his name on the door is a German-trained baker and pastry chef, specialising in traditional European breads from French pain au levain to German vollkorn.

Sandwich fillings include classic BLT, vegetarian-friendly blue cheese and pear sandwich, roasted chicken, mozzarella and prosciutto, egg salad and – highly recommended by me – pulled lamb shoulder.

Plus it has a great range of salads – the Cypriot grain, chicken pasta and roasted vegetable salads look particularly appetising – and a menu that includes gourmet breakfast food, pizza Napoli, chicken schnitzel with carrot and fennel slaw, quiches and Olaf’s own spaghetti carbonara.

The service is swift and the café is spacious with a pleasant buzz even when it’s full, which I’m sure is most often the case for weekend brunch.

Olaf’s coffee was fantastic; it serves Coffee Supreme coffee and Aaah! Tea. Olaf’s hot chocolate with homemade Belgian chocolate was divine.

Could this be the best café in Mount Eden? It would certainly be up there.
