Best Mexican restaurants in New Zealand

Viva Mexican food! At Menus.co.nz we can’t get enough tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajitas.

The flavour, the freshness of ingredients, the spice; we could wax lyrical about the virtues of Mexican cuisine until the cows come home – but chances are you already know how good it is. It’s a very popular type of food in New Zealand.

These are some of our favourite Mexican restaurants and takeaways in New Zealand.

Auckland Mexican restaurants

Aucklanders love their Mexican food, as evidenced by the fact that there are so many excellent Mexican restaurants in the City of Sails. Certainly one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in the Auckland central city, at least, is the Mexican Café.

As we highlighted in a recent review of the popular Mexican restaurant, dining at the Mexican Café is a fun and lively experience – with live music on Wednesday and Friday nights.

Mama Loco on the North Shore is equally vibrant. A modern Mexican-inspired bar and restaurant, Mama’s sunny deck is legendary, as are its late-night groove sessions.

But if it’s simply good Mexican food you’re looking for, then Mexicali Fresh comes highly recommended. Aucklanders swear by the place – and with four locations around Auckland city they’re never far away from the perfect Mexican meal.

Mexico, too, is an Auckland favourite but its food is more, shall we say, gourmet than your standard Mexican restaurant – as highlighted by the fact that it made this year’s top 50 Auckland restaurants list.

Finally, if you’ve got a hankering for authentic Mexican food then you can do no better than Mexican Specialties in Ellerslie, where you can even pick up some Mexican groceries.

Wellington Mexican restaurants

Wellington lies more than 10,000km from Mexico City – and yet the passion for great Mexican food is alive and well in New Zealand’s capital city.

Here we’ve chosen to highlight two contrasting yet excellent restaurants: Arizona on Grey Street and Pan De Muerto, which recently re-launched on Tory Street.

The former dishes up some of the best Tex-Mex (i.e. a combination of Texan and Mexican food) in Wellington – think sizzling fajita platters and Cajun corn-coated squid – while the latter is a Mexican tequila bar and restaurant that is heavy on the Mexican imagery.

Christchurch Mexican restaurants

It’s perhaps ironic that the Headless Mexican restaurant in Sumner was not one of the restaurants forcibly closed as a result of Christchurch’s deadly earthquake of February 2011.

It’s still very much open for business, serving up everything from burritos and tacos to Mexican chicken mole, a dish that counts chocolate and chili peppers amongst its many diverse ingredients.
