Review: Lava Dining in Auckland

It was Auckland’s best-kept secret – until now.

Within the Sofitel luxury hotel in the Auckland Viaduct resides a restaurant that discerning food lovers would do well to check out. Its name is Lava Dining and its new dinner menu is sublime.

For starters, Menus.co.nz can recommend Lava’s satay pork croquettes – the rich flavour of the peanut sauce goes so well with the crisp, slightly crunchy croquettes. Lined up side-by-side on a rectangular dish, they’re reminiscent of fine Belgian chocolates and just as tasty.

Next, the highlights on executive chef Scott Brown’s innovative dinner menu include scotch and tajine spiced shoulder of lamb, celeriac, shitake and yuzu; braised oyster blade, buttered swede, orange, lardons and parsley croutes; and savannah beef fillet, potato baked in milk, crisp kale, roast onion and beef jus.

We can vigorously recommend the latter – as well as Lava’s dessert menu. The ginger bread, cocoa nib ice cream, Pedro Ximenez custard, date and mandarin pudding is a delight. The dessert menu also stars chocolate and walnut fudge, hot chocolate and almond pudding with praline parfait, fudge sauce and whisky, and frozen peanut butter bonbons – among others.

Oh, and we mustn’t forget the wine. Our effervescent waitress was quick to recommend an amazing wine based on our choices of food. One of the perks of the job must be trying all the food and wine, because her skills in this area were spot on.

It seems Lava Dining is more than your average luxury hotel restaurant; it’s the real deal – a sleek and stylish restaurant with food to match.
