Best family restaurants in Wellington

Whether it’s the school holidays or you’re merely tired of cooking, why not take the whole family out for a meal?

Throw down the spatula, turn off the oven and take the whanau out to one of these great family-friendly restaurants. In Wellington, you’re never far away from a family restaurant that adults will like as much as the kids.

Fisherman’s Table, Oriental Bay & Paekakariki

Fisherman’s Table has a lot more than just a pretty view to recommend it – although to say the views at its Paekakariki restaurant are anything less than spectacular would be an understatement.

A seafood lover’s dream, Fisherman’s Table boasts some of the best and freshest fish and shell fish in Wellington. Plus it has cheap children’s meals.

Brasserie 345, Mercure Wellington

Speaking of views, check out Brasserie 345’s panoramic views over the Wellington city and harbour. This family-friendly yet upmarket venue inside the Mercure Wellington is a sweet spot to satisfy your taste buds – and children will be impressed by their own, dedicated kids menu.

Lone Star, Te Aro & Petone

With its own kids club and its legendary cowboy theme (what boy doesn’t like cowboys?), Lone Star is great for children’s birthday parties or just for a special treat. Meanwhile, adults will love the variety of the food on offer, not to mention the warm and inviting atmosphere.

There is a Lone Star restaurant in Petone and in the Courtney Quarter in the Wellington city centre.

Short Straw Café, Whitemans Valley

How’s this for something a little bit different? The aptly named Short Straw Café is New Zealand’s first café built out of straw! The kids will love it and the playground and inside play area, not to mention playing petanque and chess.

The Short Straw Café also has a purpose-built play room for themed birthday parties and a parents room.

You might also enjoy the best buffet restaurants in New Zealand.
