Best for yum cha in Wellington

There are few more enjoyable things to do than sit down and share some yum cha with friends and family.

As a dining experience, few others are as social. Noodles, pork buns, spring rolls, prawn cutlets; yum cha restaurants typically provide an abundance of great food and offer diners the opportunity to share a meal and compare notes on which dishes you like best.

There are a number of great Chinese restaurants in Wellington serving yum cha. Here are a few of our favourites.

Big Thumb Restaurant

We’ve got our thumbs up for this classic Wellington Chinese restaurant, which serves up a simple yet delicious array of yum cha from 11am-2.30pm. If you’re going with a group you’ll want to book ahead to guarantee a table for a great lunch out at Big Thumb Restaurant.

Regal Chinese Restaurant

This popular yum cha restaurant can be found on Wellington’s thriving Courtenay Place. Great for groups and couples, you’ll find Regal Chinese Restaurant's fantastic variety of dim sum dishes will keep everyone content and there won’t be an empty stomach at the table!

Grand Century Chinese Restaurant

Grand by name and nature, Grand Century is one of Wellington’s largest Chinese restaurants. With a seating capacity of around 400 diners, it offers an extensive range of tasty dim sum made from quality fresh ingredients. But you might need to book ahead – this Chinese restaurant is very popular!

Dragons Chinese Restaurant

Dragons Chinese Restaurant is easy to find with its excellent central location at the corner of Tory Street and Courtenay Place. Yum cha is available daily from 11am to 2:30pm with a large menu including such favourites as spring rolls, calamari, roasted pork bun, wonton and deep-fried prawn cutlets. This place gets busy, especially at the weekend, so be sure to book.

Majestic Restaurant

Also on Courtenay Place, Majestic Restaurant serves up a range of classic yum cha on a daily basis. The menu is wide and varied so diners with exotic or unusual tastes should find something to satisfy. They don’t call it majestic for nothing.
