The best public BBQs in NZ

Your mates at Menus.co.nz have found some great public barbecue and picnic sites throughout New Zealand to cook those summer burgers in!

Many parks have BBQs and picnic tables available for public use; however, be warned that although some of these parks don’t have to be booked in advanced, you can’t guarantee they will be available on the day. So plan ahead. If there’s a group of 10 or more of you, book your site in advance if you can to ensure a day full of BBQ fun.

A lot of New Zealand's parks are fire restricted zones so please check with your local council before taking your own barbecue to your local recreational grounds.

Auckland

Aucklanders are so spoilt for choice when it comes to public barbecue areas that we couldn’t possibly put them all here – so be sure to check out our more comprehensive list of Auckland barbecue sites.

But arguably the most popular public barbecue spots in Auckland are at the following:

Long Bay has no less than 10 electric barbecues, six single-wood barbecues and four double-wood BBQs available to the public.

Shakespear has two electric barbecues for casual use, as well as six single-wood BBQs and one double-wood BBQ on six bookable sites.

Wenderholm has a number of electric and solid-fuel BBQs available but you will need to supply your own wood or charcoal.

Wellington

Wellingtonians are similarly lucky when it comes to public barbecue spots – as we’ve highlighted on our dedicated guide to the best Wellington parks and beaches for BBQs.

Kaitoke’s peaceful tree-lined glades make for a lovely spot for a BBQ. The barbecues are free to operate but groups of 20 or more may like to book ahead for the small fee of just $20, with an additional charge of $1 per head for groups of more than 20 people.

Christchurch

Groynes Park in Christchurch has three designated picnic areas, which makes it a very popular park to visit at this time of year. The BBQs are coin operated; to book email leisureandparks@ccc.govt.nz or contact the Christchurch City Council on (03) 941 6840.

Otago

Woodhaugh Gardens in Dunedin have BBQ and picnic areas available for public use. There is no cost to book the BBQs, however the BBQs require a key to operate them (which is collected from the Dunedin City Council), and there is a $30.00 key deposit. Specific details must be arranged with the council’s Community Development Adviser on 03 477 4000.

Also in Dunedin, Bethunes Gully has public BBQ access. There is no cost to book the BBQs, however the BBQs require a key to operate them (which is collected from the Dunedin City Council), and there is a $30.00 key deposit. Specific details must be arranged with the council’s Community Development Adviser on 03 477 4000.

Dolamore Park Scenic Reserve in Gore is another great spot for a barbecue, with facilities available on site as well as a children’s playground. A popular spot for camping, Dolamore is also a great place to go tramping.
