Where To Eat… Epsom

Nestled snugly between Mount Eden and One Tree Hill, just south of Newmarket, is the Auckland suburb of Epsom. Named after the town in England, this suburb is defined by it’s neat, tree-lined streets, architecture and century old villas, but they’re not the only thing that Epsom has to offer. It has a vast array of family-friendly restaurants, cafes and a few bars to boot!

If you’re hungry, and we mean really hungry, then Epsom has one of the best appetite-satisfying, belly-filling restaurants in all of Auckland. Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ on Manukau Road, winner of Metro Magazine’s ‘Best Restaurant For Older Kids’ award in 2009, offers you a unique (and filling) dining experience. Have your meal created from ingredients you’ve chosen and cooked to suit your palette – definitely worth a visit.. Oh, and did we mention you really need to be hungry?

KK Malaysia Cuisine is a bit of a hidden gem in Epsom. If it’s authentic Malaysian cuisine (at an authentic price) and a busy atmosphere that you’re after then this place is not to be missed. However, be prepared to wait for a table, especially at weekends! Oh, and give the butter chicken a try – it’s delish!

If you find a restaurant that’s filled with locals then the food is usually out of this world. This is exactly the case with Gee Gee’s on Manukau Road. The menu caters to all ages, tastes and appetites and the chef’s seem more than happy to amend or substitute dishes for you. The busy atmosphere, great service and yummy food will make you want to come back for more.

Epsom also has it’s fair share of controversial restaurants and one in particular that we love to hate and hate to love is Me Ne Frego. The name of this restaurant is Italian for ‘I don’t give a damn’ and, to be honest, it sometimes feels like that’s exactly the owners attitude. However, the food and atmosphere out-ways this by a long shot! Me Ne Frego is definitely not for the impatient amongst us but, if you want a long, leisurely meal then grab a seat (if you can!), order your favourite bottle of vino from their extensive menu and enjoy the food that comes your way. Oh, a word of advice, the chef (who is also the owner) can sometimes use words that aren’t for the faint hearted so it may be best to leave the little ones at home this once!
